Madre_Land: Julysa Sosa Debuts New Installation at Centro de Artes
S.O.S.A. Studio is honored to share that our founder and artist, Julysa Sosa, will debut a new large-scale installation, “Altar de la Recámara: Mujer, Ollin, Memoria (The Altar of the Bedroom: Woman, Movement, Memory),” as part of the exhibition Madre_Land: South Texas Memory & the Art of Making Home at Centro de Artes Gallery in San Antonio, Texas.
Curated by Bonnie Cisneros and presented by the City of San Antonio Department of Arts & Culture, Madre_Land brings together twenty-six South Texas artists and scholars whose works explore domestic aesthetics, rasquache sensibility, ancestral healing, and environmental connection. The exhibition will be on view from October 2, 2025, through February 22, 2026, and open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 AM to 5 PM.
In “Altar de la Recámara,” Sosa reimagines the vanity table—an object historically tied to gender, consumption, and surveillance—as a living altar that observes across time. The work transforms a colonial tool of discipline into a presence that insists on care, continuity, and slowness. Through this transformation, adornment becomes preparation—a daily act of resistance against the erosion of time and identity.
This installation continues Sosa’s multidisciplinary practice, which moves between photography, installation, and storytelling to examine memory, matrilineal knowledge, and ancestral connection. Her work often engages the intersections of land, identity, and belonging, centering Xicanx and Tejana experience within contemporary art.
