S.A. gallery spotlights South Texas memories

👋 Madalyn here, with two new art exhibitions I'm excited to check out at Centro de Artes gallery.

The big picture: Both explore the ways families in our region preserve culture and identity, whether through the spaces they create or the stories they pass down.

Zoom in: "Madre_Land: South Texas Memory & the Art of Making Home" (first floor) showcases work from South Texas artists and scholars. The exhibit is designed to feel like you're walking through a family home.

  • "Cuentos y Arte: Mexican Folktales of the Southwest" (second floor) features work by women artists connected to the region. It draws inspiration from Mexican folktales such as La Llorona.

If you go: Both exhibitions are on display through Feb. 22. The gallery is open 10:30am–5pm Wednesday–Friday and noon–5pm on weekends.

  • Admission is free.

💭 My thought bubble: The photos of "Madre_Land" reminded me of the intimate, lived-in feel of my grandmothers' homes, and of Frida Kahlo's Casa Azul in Mexico City, which was preserved as she left it.
