Inside Suite 206: A Working Artist Studio at CAMi in Garfield Park
Julysa Sosa is a Mexican fine artist whose studio, S.O.S.A. Studio LLC, is located in Suite 206 at CAMi, the Contemporary Art Museum of Indianapolis, in the Garfield Park neighborhood on the city’s south side. The studio is where she makes portraiture, installation, sculpture, and mixed media work, and where she hosts open studio hours several times a year.
Where is the studio?
Suite 206 is on the second floor of CAMi’s main building at [1125 Cruft St.], Indianapolis, IN [ZIP], across from Garfield Park. CAMi sits on Big Car Collaborative’s arts campus, which includes galleries, artist studios, artist housing, a community radio station, and a public art park.
What is CAMi?
CAMi opened in May 2026 in a 125-year-old former dairy barn that Big Car Collaborative renovated into a contemporary art museum. It is a non-collecting museum, which means it commissions and shows work rather than acquiring it, and it is the first museum in Indianapolis dedicated to contemporary art since the city lost its last one in 2020. Admission is free.
What it’s like to work inside CAMi?
I moved into Suite 206 knowing the building had a long life before it held art. The ceilings, the light, and the scale of the place keep reminding me that it was built for work, and that has shaped how I think about my own. I came to fine art through ten years of photojournalism, where the job was to show up and record what was in front of me. A studio asks for something different. It asks me to build the world first and then document.
Right now the walls hold the early stages of several projects at once, including large-scale mixed media canvases that will translate my digital illustration series The Transcriber into physical work, and a sculpture series that I hope to add metalwork to my skillset. Some days the room is full of people. Most days it is quiet, with the occasional museum patrons peeking in through the glass to watch me work. If my door is ever propped open, feel free to walk in and chat.
Can I visit the studio?
The studio is a private workspace, but I open it to the public during scheduled open studio hours, usually tied to CAMi programming or First Fridays. However, we announce dates first through the studio newsletter.
