VANITY ALTAR CANDLE

$35.00

A white glass column candle carrying a faithful reproduction of the hand-carved panel from Altar de la Recámara: Mujer, Ollin, Memoria, an installation shown at Centro de Artes in San Antonio. On the panel, a femme Tezcatlipoca appears in two stages of life, young and elder, each holding the obsidian mirror that sees you with your own eyes. They move through a field of stars and stand on eagle talons, one rising as the other descends, morning and evening turning into each other. Between them hang two crescent moons, the shape the moon held on the night Julysa was born and on the night her grandmother was born.

Made for a vanity, a dresser, or a bedside altar, the places where a table quietly becomes one.

The candle is 7 inches tall in white glass, made in small batches by S.O.S.A. Studio. Keep it on a heat-safe surface, never leave it burning unattended, and stop once an inch of wax remains. Read the full story behind the panel in Studio Notes.
